We are here today to give thanks for these children, with their family and friends, and to support their parents in their responsibilities with prayer and love. God became one of us in Jesus, and understands all that surrounds the arrival and upbringing of children. So let us pray ….
God our creator,
we thank you for the wonder of new life
and for the mystery of human love.
We thank you for all whose support and skill
surround and sustain the beginning of life.
We thank you that we are known to you by name
and loved by you from all eternity.
We thank you for Jesus Christ,
who has opened to us the way of love.
We praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God for ever.
Parents and sponsors stand at the front of church. The minister says
Parents and Sponsors, the Church welcomes you with joy and celebrates with you God’s gift of parenthood. So I ask you,
What name have you given this child?
His/her name is N.
Then to all parents and sponsors
Do you receive these children as a gift from God?
Do you wish to give thanks to God and seek his blessing?
The minister addresses the supporting friends and says
Will you do all that you can to help and support N and N in the bringing up of N?
With the help of God, we will
The minister addresses the congregation and says
Will you do all that you can to help and support these families?
With the help of God, we will
Who is it for?
A Thanksgiving is for anyone, no matter where you live. If you want a nice way to say ‘thank you’ to God for the safe delivery of a child contact us today.
A Thanksgiving is a lovely service in its own right, and the vicar has to get a children’s bible to give you, as part of the service.
Why have a Thanksgiving?
It’s a nice happy service, which takes place in the family services.
The service of Baptism, if you take it seriously, places duties on the Parents and Godparent of the person being baptised. Not everyone is comfortable with these. The Baptism service requires you to agree to pray for your children, draw them by your example into the community of faith, walk with them in the way of Christ and help them to take their place within the life and worship of the Church. You are required and will be asked to affirm these promises before the congregation and before God during the service. Are you sure that you are able to meet your obligations, even with the help of God?
What does it cost?
It’s free, but we hope that you will make a donation to the church.
The minister will take each child in his arms and says
As Jesus took children in his arms and blessed them,
so now we ask God’s blessing on N.
Heavenly Father, we praise you for his/her birth;
surround him/her with your blessing
that he/she may know your love,
be protected from evil,
and know your goodness all his/her days.
During this prayer he anoints each child with oil and when all the children have been prayed for we say
May they learn to love all that is true,
grow in wisdom and strength
and, in due time, come through faith and baptism
to the fullness of your grace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
A copy of a Gospel is presented, with these words
Receive this book. It is the good news of God’s love. Take it as your guide.
The minister prays for the parents
May God the Father of all bless these parents
and give them grace to love and care for their children.
May God give them wisdom, patience and faith,
help them to provide for the children’s needs
and, by their example,
reveal the love and truth that are in Jesus Christ. Amen.
The minister prays for the Parent(s) and may anoint them with oil
The Lord bless you and watch over you,
the Lord make his face shine upon you
and be gracious to you,
the Lord look kindly on you and give you peace;
and the blessing of God almighty,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be among you and remain with you always. Amen.

A ‘Thanksgiving’ does what is says on the tin! It thanks God for the safe delivery
of a child,
or for a son or daughter that has been adopted. A thanksgiving is a great way of beginning your family life together.
You do not have to live here to have a Thanksgiving.
